Princeton had its emergency room closed and went without a doctor for 24 hours beginning at 8 a.m. Monday.

With no doctors on call and the sole locum (temporary doctor) available taken ill just before the shift, residents of the 2,600-person town were told to drive more than 100 kilometres east to Penticton for treatment.

Life-threatening injuries were also to be sent to Penticton by air ambulance.

A spokeswoman for Interior Health said the last minute notice made it impossible to find a temporary replacement doctor to travel to Princeton for the day.
