Hundreds come to support 2011 Nelson Terry Fox Run
Maybe it was the weather . . . meaning it didn’t rain.
Maybe it was the Kootenay Rhythm Dragon Boat racers bringing their friends.
Whatever the reason the 2011 Nelson edition Terry Fox Run proved to be a tremendous success as more than 150 runners, joggers, cyclists and walkers cruised the Heritage City waterfront Sunday morning.
“I saw a bunch of new faces this year,” Nelson Terry Fox organizer Michael Hurley said following the race.
Hurley said initial numbers show the annual run raised $4700 for cancer research.
Hurley hopes the school run, set for Wednesday, Sept. 28, will boost that total to over $7000.
“If we to seven thousand that would be pretty good for Nelson,” Hurley said.
In 2010 the combined races raised $6000 for cancer research.
Since the Terry Fox Run started, the fundraiser has raised close to $500 Million for cancer research.
Eighty-five cents on the dollars for every dollar raised goes directly toward cancer research.
