Bear Aware: not just a good thing, it's the law
This fall, as the berries get scarce in the mountains, bears come looking for food sources at lower elevations.
To protect these bears from becoming accustomed to human contact and therefore potentially dangerous, we must be diligent in removing potential food sources from our yards and gardens.
Keep your garbage inside your house or in a bear-proof container until garbage day (its the law in Nelson)
Pick up downed fruit and keep your garden harvested.
If you have more fruit than you can pick, get help from a neighbor or a friend. If you’re in Nelson, you can get help from Harvest Rescue a program of Nelson Food Cupboard. Call 551 VEGE to register your trees and volunteers will come pick your fruit, leaving you a portion to enjoy.
