August 16th, 2011

Nearly a year after an Alberta school teacher died in a boating incident in southeastern B.C., first-degree murder charges have been laid against her husband.

Peter Ernest Edward Beckett, 54, from Westlock, Alta. was arrested as he left a property near Christina Lake on Aug. 12 and will remain in custody until his next court appearance Aug. 18, according to an RCMP news release.

On Aug. 8, 2010, police were called to Shelter Bay Provincial Park just after 8 p.m. to investigate a report that Laura Letts Beckett, 50, had been standing in a boat and had fallen into the lake. Police said the couple had been fishing in the Upper Arrow Lakes; Laura Beckett was not wearing a life jacket.
