The Kamloops Fire Centre received over one hundred smoke reports following a lightning storm that tracked through the Okanagan late this afternoon — a storm that is now heading towards the West Kootenay region.

The lightning storm came through the area with a significant amount of precipitation; thus, the fires that have been confirmed to this point are spot size. Initial attack crews supported by birddog aircraft are currently performing assessments of these reports and will be prioritizing their actions based on their findings.

The recent storm activity serves as a reminder to the public to be diligent in preventing human-caused fires to permit the Wildfire Management Branch to allocate resources to naturally occurring wildfires.

Report a wildfire or unattended campfire by calling *5555 on your cell phone or toll-free 1-800 663-5555.
