Here’s the event listings for the Royal Grill and Lounge for the week.

Scientists of Sound with Joel West

Tuesday, July 5th – Showtime 9 pm

House ‘n’ Home and the Royal proudly present Scientists of Sound.  These guys are a looping madness duo – all sounds are performed, recorded and manipulated live.

They create dirty electro sounds in an improvisational original format and merge it together with well crafted original dance tracks and thumping beats.

Wearing masks and lab coats, Scientist of Sound engage in live looping madness with synched video and lights.

All the way from their Halifax home, don’t miss them in Nelson. Nelson’s very own and completely wonderful Joel West will open the night.

The Lee Boys with guests

Wednesday, July 6th – Showtime 9 pm

Mountain Thunder Presents and The Royal are pleased to announce the return of The Lee Boys.

The Lee Boys are one of America’s finest African-American sacred steel ensembles, and they perform high energy soul, blues, gospel and funk with a level of intensity and musicianship rarely seen.

The Lee Boys have played main stages at the biggest festivals in the U.S, including Bonnaroo, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, High Sierra, Austin City Limits and many more.

Fish and Bird with guests

Thursday, July 7th – Showtime 9 pm

  • $10 at the door

The indie folk sensation, Fish and Bird return to Nelson.

Fish & Bird have been defying expectations for a long time. They formed in Victoria in 2006 as an acoustic duo, comprised of Taylor Ashton (banjo, guitar, vocals) and Adam Iredale-Gray (fiddle).

On their 2007 self titled debut, their take on ‘folk’ included original songs in odd time signatures and traditional murder ballads with rock beats.

2009’s Left Brain Blues was a more mature exploration of the space between folk traditions and reckless creativity, with Ashton & Gray playing multiple instruments on each song, and toying with the formats that inspired them.

Some of the friends they enlisted to help fill out the sound on the record and at live shows eventually became permanent members of the band, and now Fish & Bird are the five-piece indie-folk powerhouse we know today.

They have weird vocal improv sections, they rock out in 11/8, sometimes it seems like they’re playing bluegrass, and they might make you cry.

A truly talented bunch you’ll be happy you experienced.

EL-B and special guests

Friday, July 8th – Showtime 9:30 pm

  • $10 before 10:30, $15 after

The legendary El-B, referred to by some as the Godfather of Dubstep, will be stopping in Nelson whilst touring behind his latest LP release Ghost Chaser

El-B originally made his name as part of the legendary Groove Chronicles outfit, being the first artist to bring a dark edge to UK Garage with tracks like Stone Cold and 1999

Through his own Ghost Records imprint, El-B has sculpted and defined the modern dubstep sound and famously inspired the prodigious talent of Burial and countless others.

Alongside EL-B will be Yan Zombie, Fluxo and Dubconscious — a great line-up.

And since the Royal is one of the Nelson Lumber Jackies Roller Derby team sponsors, we’ve decided to make our event the official afterparty to their event the “Carnival of Carnage,” with $5 off cover with your Derby ticket stub.

Fareed Haque’s Math Games

Saturday, July 9th – Showtime 9 pm

Co-founder of the jam super group Garaj Mahal, Fareed Haque returns to Nelson, this time with a new band and a new sound.

Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque enjoys a career that spans the spectrum of musical styles while moving easily between jazz and classical guitar.

Fareed’s versatility has created a high demand for him with prominent jazz and classical artists all over the world.

His new band, Math Games, is described as a Geometric Funk Jazz Guitar Formulae for the above average citizen.  And not only is this an experience for your ears, they’ve got some pretty stellar live visuals happening on stage too.

These are an extremely talented bunch of musicians with one of the world’s best guitarists.

Mat McHugh with special guests

Sunday, July 10th – Showtime 8 pm

The Royal is pleased to present Mat McHugh of The Beautiful Girls with special guests Anuhea and more.

Front man of the extremely popular Australian group, and master of the funky, laid back, surf rock, Mat McHugh and The Beautiful Girls have quickly become one of Australia’s hottest acts.

This is your chance to see a stripped down, acoustic and intimate performance of their music, as well as Mat’s McHugh’s own originals as he tours in support of his newest album Go Don’t Stop

Artists, Anuhea, and Ethan Tucker will also share the stage.
