As if the good work Nelson Fire Rescue was doing in the city wasn’t enough, the department is even setting an example to departments across Canada.

This year Nelson Fire Rescue was chosen as the winner of the 2010-2011 Bill Grindlay Department of the Year Award — given to the department in the province that has shown outstanding achievements in fundraising and generating public awareness over the past year.

Each year Muscular Dystrophy Canada’s Fire Fighter Advisory Group, along with staff, selects recipients for the annual Fire Fighter Fundraising awards.

Amanda De Vries, revenue development coordinator with Muscular Dystrophy Canada, gave Nelson Fire Rescue high praise.

“We were most impressed with your willingness to take on new initiatives, your relationship building with key partners, and your dedication to your community,” she said in a press release. “Nelson Fire Rescue is an encouragement and an example to fire departments across the country to support people with neuromuscular disorders.”

The award will be presented to Nelson Fire Rescue at the Muscle Sense Conference and Awards Banquet on Nov. 18 in Vancouver.
