Campbell set to become Canada's high commissioner to UK
Former premier Gordon Campbell is set to become Canada’s high commissioner to the United Kingdom — courtesy of the Harper government — Postmedia News reported Friday.
B.C. Premier Christy Clark confirmed the appointment on Thursday.
Campbell and his wife Nancy attended a series of training sessions for new ambassadors and their spouses this month at the Centre for Intercultural Learning in Gatineau, Que.
The post has historically oscillated between career politicians and diplomats, said Fen Hampson, director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa.
He said Stephen Harper’s choice to appoint Campbell shows the prime minister is playing toward the political centre.
