Local songstress Miss Quincy and Rob Funk will be the musical treats to launch the 2011 version of the Saturday market in Cottonwood Falls Park in Nelson this weekend.

Despite the cold, wet spring, the market manager expects a good showing at the opening day.

“We decided to delay the opening for a couple of weeks, and I think that helped the farmers have more produce to offer,” said Paul Hinrichs, who will be managing the market for a second year.

“You will find bedding plants, ready to eat food, herbal body care, and hand-made gifts as part of the variety that Cottonwood Market is known for.”

The West Kootenay EcoSociety operates Cottonwood Market as a project to promote local food security, relocalization of the economy and to create a meeting place for arts, culture and community networking.

The EcoSociety also runs the Downtown Local Market on Baker Street (on Wednesdays), which will start up on June 15.

Miss Quincy will kick off the season’s entertainment at noon, and Rob Funk will follow at 1 p.m.
