It’s game on for those who wish to burn backyard waste this month.

With the blessing of the Nelson Fire and Rescue, City council has opened up the sale of permits for the backyard burn period through to May 31.

Those wishing to burn must have a valid permit and follow the Corporation of the City of Nelson Bylaw #3077, specifically Section 6.5 Yard Clearing.

Permits can be purchased at the Nelson Fire Department, located at 919 Ward Street. Payment for the $10 fee can be paid by cash or cheque at the time of issuance.

Residents will be asked to follow the Ministry of Environment’s Venting Index guidelines and burn only on days when venting is good, to minimize any accumulation of smoke causing air pollution.

They will also be required to report to Nelson Fire and Rescue on the days of scheduled burning.

Contravention of Bylaw #3077 may be met with suspension or revocation of the permit and a fee for service as set out under Sections 6.7 Suspension of Fire Permits, 6.9 Suspension of Burning, and 6.10 Burning Without a Required Permit.

The Corporation of the City of Nelson Bylaw #3077 can be found on the City of Nelson website at:
