Ideas Café Salon: War and Peace
at Oxygen Art Centre, Friday, April 15, 7:30 pm
Oxygen Art Centre hosts its first Philosopher’s Café Salon with inspired facilitator Miguel Rodriguez who will lead a public discussion on the topic of War and Peace.
Since the 17th Century, people have been gathering in ‘Salons,’ held partly to amuse one another and partly to educate. Rodriquez has been involved with the SFU-based Philosopher’s Café series in Vancouver and is pleased to be bringing something similar to Nelson.
Human beings (and other animals too) seem to have been fighting each other since the beginning of life on the planet. Peace seems to be just a temporary situation procured by the winner.
In a globalized world intersected with complicated politics and finances, what is the meaning of peace? Is world peace merely a utopia?
Rodriguez is a writer from Spain, currently living in Nelson with his family. His interests lie in the fields of philosophy, religion, politics, and (lately) law.
He has published the English translation of A Pure Theory of Democracy (UPA, 2009) of Spanish author Antonio García-Trevijano, and is currently preparing its sequel, A Pure Theory of the Republic, to be published in 2011.
In Spanish, he has published a voluminous philosophical work called The Great Oscillation: toward a new map of knowledge (2010) and will shortly be publishing his Buddhism, Science, and Intersubjectivity.
