The West Kootenay Wildcats, based in Castlegar, are currently in Kelowna playing at the B.C. Hockey Female Bantam provincials.

Nelson Minor Hockey product Jesse Cooper has graciously agreed to blog the happenings of the Cats for The Nelson Daily.

The Wildcats scored a 2-0 win over Kamloops Sunday to open the eight-team tournament.

Here’s Jesse’s blog account of the day.

Sunday we kicked off the day with a big game of soccer with the whole team and younger siblings.

Then our coach Cary Fisher from Rossland sat us down for a “talk.”

He started by saying out of all the teams that he has coached in his 24 years, we have made the most prgress he’s ever seen.

Also, all the coaching is done and now it is up to us to make it happen. We headed to the rink for the opening ceimonies where all the teams walked on the ice in there jerseys.

We then enjoyed canada’s national anthem song by a young Kelowna player. I did not catch her name but I must say she was very good.

After we came back to the rink and had our rest before our big game against the Kamloops Mystics.

Myself and the other two girls on my line, Emma Hare (centerman) and Jena Wheeldon (right wing) talked stratagies to improve our game play.

We are called the nelson line because we all happen to be from Nelson.

When we arrived at the rink nerves and excitment set in. When we hit the ice we started of a little slow but once we started working the puck in the other teams end, we were on fire.

The first goal was scored by our captain, Mckayla Yuris, with a slap shot from the blue line sliding just under the goalie’s pad.

We also had a injured when Stephany Mcualey crashed into the goal post and was unable to finish the game.

I am unsure of her injuries.

Our second and final goal was scored by Taylor Dickson one-timing it into the net. that lead us to our 2-0 victory.

Tomorrow (Monday)  we play at 7:30 am so it’s an early night to bed. We play the Richmond Ravens.

Wish us luck!

Saturday, March 19

Today (Saturday) we arrived in Kelowna for the 2011 B.C. Hockey Female Bantam Tier 1 Provincial Tournment.

It stared off with a banquet dinner at the Ramada Hotel.

We enjoyed a speech from (Canadian) gold medal champion Gina Kingzbury.

Gina showed us the video that the Canadian team watched right before they played team U.S.A which helped get them motivated for the big game.

We also found out the winner of the poster challenge each team participated in which was Richmond Ravons.

Each player also received a gift bag filled with coupons and locally made goodies.

Our coach set the curfew at 10 p.m. and we must be up at 7:30 am.

Tomorrow (Sunday) is another exciting day which I am looking forward to.
