The accolades keep coming in for Nelson’s Lauren Taylor.

Less than two days after becoming the first freshman in school history to win a golf tournament, the L.V. Rogers graduate was named Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week today by the league.

Taylor won her first university women’s golf tournament title after shooting an even-par 70-74-144 to win the Cal State Fullerton hosted event at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irving, California.

The Granite Pointe at Nelson product won the eight-school event by shooting a 2-over-par 74 and an easy four-stroke victory over Patty Chawakitmetha of UC Irvine and Simone Hoey of Long Beach State.

Taylor finished the second round with three birdies and five bogeys.

During the opening round Monday, Taylor had three birdies and one bogey to grab a first-round lead with a two-under par 70.

Taylor, in her first year at Portland State following a solid high school and junior girl’s golf career, also tied a school record by shooting an even-par score for a 36-hole tournament — accomplished just once before, by Rebecca Randolph who shot 72-72—144 at the Bobcat Desert Classic on Mar. 2-3, 2003.

Portland State finished third overall in team standings after holding a three-shot advantage following the opening round.
