Starting this week The Nelson Daily and Georama Growers will be introducing a new weekly feature on plants, for the garden and for the yard.

Through the expertise of the Georama staff and Case and Imelda Grypma, the feature will illustrate each plant, its characterisitcs and its care and feeding.

It will form an invaluable resource for those who may be new to gardening, or those veterans may be looking to pick up a few new ideas.

Today is the first installment. Check it out …

They are one of the first signs that winter is on its way out.

Soft, fuzzy buds appear up and down the shiny bare twigs in late winter as the pussy willow first begins to make its appearance.

The weeping form of the French pussy willow (botanical name: Salix caprea) also comes in a very unique ‘serpentine’ version.

You will see these exotic plants at the Georama Growers Garden Centre blooming right now.

These small trees are a very worthwhile addition to the garden, with their graceful small forms. Their inviting buds and catkins are a harbinger of the spring to come.

Pussy willows are not particular about growing conditions but do require full sun. It will perform best in a fertile soil but will tolerate less desirable conditions.

These showy zone three plants are very hardy and easy to grow for even the most novice of gardeners.

Georama Growers Garden Centre

Serving all of the West Kootenays, Georama Growers’ operations include: the bedding plant crop, a year round garden center/nursery and the winter poinsettia crop.

Recently incorporating the West Kootenay’s oldest retail flower shop into the Garden Centre’s location has added 500 sq. ft. of retail space; this, together with wholesale tropical and flowering plant distribution almost completes the Georama picture.

Over the past few years, Georama Growers has been the principle landscape contractor for the Prestige chain of resort hotels and has specialized in residential and commercial landscape installations with a strong focus on pond and water garden construction.

Georama Growers is an active participant in horticulture training programs in B.C.’s Interior, being a workplace practicum site for both Caribou College and the College of the Rockies, and by serving as program advisors, sessional and contract instructors for the Horticulture Technician Program at the College of the Rockies in nearby Creston.
