A year ago Nelson’s Barb Saunders four medals at the 2010 World Masters Indoor Athletic Championships held earlier the month in Kamloops.

Back to the same stomping grounds in Spoolmak Country, the avid track specialist won four more medals — most being of the golden variety — at the 2011 Canadian National Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships 10-days ago in the Tournament Capital of B.C.

“(These) were not the greatest times as it’s pretty hard to train for track during the winter in Nelson,” Saunders told The Nelson Daily.

Saunders, 71, won silver in the 400 meters before taking gold in the 800 meters, 1500 meters and 3000 meters.

Saunders, coached by husband Clint, competes in the 70-75-age category.

No doubt the Nelsonite will be front and center when the 2011 B.C. Seniors Games makes its stop in the West Kootenay in August 16-20 in Nelson, Trail and Castlegar.

Track and Field, set for Haley Park in Warfield, is one of 24 sports offered in the annual Seniors event.
