Kimberley RCMP have now confirmed the identity of the female body that was found along the St. Mary’s Forest Service Road on Sunday, March 6, although the cause of her death is still unknown.

Forty-nine-year-old Carol Ann McPhail was located by the Kimberley Search and Rescue team approximately six kilometres south of St. Mary’s Lake.

McPhail had not been heard from since Feb. 28 and was reported missing to the Kimberley RCMP on March 3. Police were able to trace McPhail’s movements to the Forest Service Road, which narrowed the scope of the search considerably.

At the present time, the cause of death is unknown. A forensic autopsy is scheduled for March 10 and police hope to learn more at that time. Currently, the police are still making enquiries to determine why McPhail was in that area.

Background

On Sunday the Kimberley RCMP began investigating the death of a woman near Kimberley.

Prior to this investigators sought the assistance of the Kimberley Search and Rescue Team that same day as a result of information regarding the possible whereabouts of a local woman who had been reported missing on March 3.

On March 3, the Kimberley RCMP were told a 49-year-old female — later identified as McPhail — hadn’t been seen for three days.

It took police a couple of days to track her latest movements, but this led them to an area southeast of St. Mary’s Lake, along the Forest Service Road.

On March 6, the Kimberley Search and Rescue group headed to search this area, and at 2:15 p.m., they located the body of McPhail under a tree.
