The Nelson Bantam Leafs are in Smithers this week representing the West Kootenay at the B.C. Hockey Bantam Rep Tier III Tournament.

The Reps got past Castlegar in a close series to advance to the provincial tournament.

All week Nelson defenceman Tyler Podgorenko will blog from the B.C. Interior to keep The Nelson Daily readers up to speed on the happenings in Smithers.

Here’s Tyler’s first draft:

This morning the team woke up to and early day around 7 a.m.

We ate breakfast at the local hotel . . . it  was a great little continental resteraunt with great food.

After eating we the departed to the arena, and as a team we walked. Getting dressed, we prepared mentally and physically we hit the ice.

Looking over at the other team we realized that physically they were a lot bigger than us, so we would have to be much quicker.

We got going and soon enough Brandon Sookro popped one of his goals of the game into the net. Minutes Later Sookro struck again and with that we had a 2-0 lead.

Smithers came back with a responding goal after the next two goals.

With a few minutes remaining Nolan Renwick scored a goal with a blast from the point. The rest of the game was a fast paced one with a lot of hitting and action. Playing with a 4-2 lead on a goal from Nolan Percival, again we saw Smithers come back. After lots of battling and more action, Sookro came back with his third  of the game.

As our team began to drift away from the game Smithers jumped back in and scored another one. The Leafs popped two more as Dylan Whiffen and Sam Weber, with the winner, scored. The last goal of the game went  to Smithers with two minutes left.

We held off to win the game 7-6 wiith a great preformence from Brayden Pompu between the pipes.

Now weare sitting around the hotel hanging out as a team and are just about ready to go out and watch some of the opposing compitition at the arena.

Tomorow we face off against the Dawson creek squad.

(Dawson Creek defeated Ridge Meadows 9-3 to set up a key game between two unbeaten teams following Day one’s action.)
