Skiers survive avalanche in Fernie
Three men who had been skiing out of bounds in Fernie Alpine Ski Resort narrowly escaped with their lives Tuesday.
Around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, resort staff received a distress call from a male skier who asked for assistance in rescuing his two friends.
They had been skiing outside the resort’s controlled recreational area when an avalanche occurred. The resort staff contacted Elk Valley RCMP, who in turn proceeded to activate Fernie Search and Rescue.
Within minutes of the original call from the stranded skier, Elk Valley RCMP received another call from the resort requesting to cancel rescue activation efforts.
The three male skiers were able to get themselves out of the avalanche area and safely made their way back within the resort’s recreational boundaries.
All three men are doing well but one is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
