With nearly 30 per cent of their enrolment coming from Nelson, the Blewett School parent advisory committee has asked City council for some funding towards a $77,118 community playground.

With no money available from School District No. 8 (Kootenay lake) for the project, and the playground having been condemned as unsafe, the PAC has turned to other sources to replace the structure for the children.

In-kind contributions to date have totaled $21,500, while estimated donations and grants-in-aid could contribute another $45,627, the remaining funding requirement is just under $10,000, said Blewett School playground steering committee chair Ron McDougall.

He gave council the conceptual model, budget and schedule and the fundraising efforts to date for the initiative.

With 100 total students in the school, and 30 per cent coming from Nelson, McDougall asked council if they would consider supporting the project financially.

Although City council could not commit at the committee of the whole meeting — which is only for presentations and audiences — they did refer the proposal to City staff for the April 4 council meeting.
