The school district has a new chair and vice chair of its board of trustees.

Creston trustee Mel Joy was elected to replace Nelson trustee Bill Maleschko as the chair of School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) for the 2011 school year at the Dec. 14 meeting of the board.

Creston South Rural trustee Verna Mayers-McKenzie was elected vice chair at the same meeting, replacing Crawford Bay, East and North Shore trustee Lenora Trenaman.

The election of a new board chair and vice chair is an annual process and is one aspect of the democratic environment in which trustees work.

The SD8 board consists of nine members, with the city of Nelson having two representatives — Maleschko and Bob Wright.

See http://www.sd8.bc.ca/board.htm for more information on the school board, contacts and what committee appointments each trustee holds.

School District No. 8’s area covers approximately 15,000 square kilometers and includes the communities of: Yahk, Kitchener, Wynndel, Canyon, Erickson, Boswell, Crawford Bay, Kootenay Bay, Riondel, and Creston on the east side of Kootenay Lake, as well as Kaslo, Meadow Creek, Johnson’s Landing, Argenta, Ainsworth, Slocan, Winlaw, South Slocan, Crescent Valley, Slocan Park, Taghum, Blewett, Ymir, Balfour, Harrop, Procter, Salmo, and Nelson on the west side of Kootenay Lake.
