Man escapes with life after falling down mine shaft

A man who fell 70 feet down a mineshaft on his snowmobile near Nelson last Tuesday escaped a grisly fate with only a few broken bones and some cuts and bruises.

The 58-year-old man’s friends rescued him after he plunged down the mine shaft while snowmobiling in the region Tuesday, Dec. 28 in an area between Nelson and Creston.

The man was among three people sledding in the area.

According to The Canadian Press reports, his friends used rope to climb into the hole and haul the man up to within 15 feet of the surface of the shaft.

Nelson Search and Rescue where able to haul the man out from there after they arrived.
