Weather continued to wreck havoc on the West Kootenay Monday afternoon as several tonnes of snow crashed down on Highway 3 approximately 30 kilometres south of Salmo Monday afternoon, closing the road.

The avalanche and snow slide forced RCMP officers to declare a portion of Highway 3 closed south of Salmo after a report came in of the incident around 3 p.m.

The exact location is being confirmed, said Stff. Sgt. Dan Siebel, operations NCO of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment

“RCMP Salmo members … arrived on scene and confirmed that no one is trapped and there are no injuries,” he said in a release. “Unfortunately, the highway has been closed due to the avalanche.”

The Department of Highways has been advised and efforts are now underway to clear the snow and reopen the highway.

Travelers should be advised the highway will not reopen until at least 8 p.m. Monday evening (Jan. 17). A check for current road conditions and closures can be made on the Drive BC website.
