Most Terasen Gas customers in B.C. will soon be enjoying the lowest natural gas rates in five years.

The company says the B.C. Utilities Commission has approved rate cuts effective Jan. 1.

Terasen says most customers will save from $55 to $69 a year, but people in the Whistler area will save a bit more, while those in the Fort Nelson region will save a little less.

Natural gas rates will not change on Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast or Powell River.

Strong natural gas production, large inventories of gas and lower than expected demand in parts of the U.S. are all factors behind the rate cut for most Terasen customers.

However, customers of propane in the Revelstoke area will be paying $33 more a year because of an increase in propane commodity rates.
