Feds say one Creston border guard has fired new gun – to shoot a moose
Four years after the government initiated a 10-year plan to arm 4,800 border agents with guns, the Canadian Border Services Agency reports one officer has fired one firearm thus far — to kill a moose that was “seriously injured.”
The incident happened in August, 2009, near Creston where a border intelligence officer was working with RCMP and a United States border patrol agent, the CBSA said in response to a written question from a Liberal MP.
The CBSA also reported that 1,386 officers have been equipped with firearms. The program has cost $143 million to date, mainly to train officers to use their weapons.
In 2006, the Conservative government approved $785 million in funding for the initiative, which the government says is intended to strengthen border security.
