An eight-inch dump of snow ground buses to a halt in Nelson and created numerous fender benders across the city while Old Man Winter paid the region an unexpected visit Monday.

Treacherous road conditions caused Nelson Transit in-town bus service to be suspended Monday morning. The North Shore bus service was resumed at 11:20 a.m.

In one case, a Transit bus slid down Park Street and into a parked vehicle. Transit riders can also call 250-352-8228 for more information on the bus routes.

In the last day snow has hit the majority of the region, but most of the predictions for Nelson and area were at significantly reduced levels than what had fallen.

According to the Canadian Avalanche Centre, more snow had fallen in the low lying areas like Nelson, than on the mountain tops — likely due to the mass of incoming Arctic air and the effect of the lake.

Like Vancouver on the coast, Nelson will dip to un-seasonal lows Monday night, around -20 degrees Celsius, with a high of only nine degrees on Tuesday.

However, the snow will stop as, in a rare twist in the West Kootenay, sunny skies should greet people on their way to work on Tuesday.

The snow will return on Thursday with around five to 10 centimetres, and the temperatures are expected to climb above freezing by Saturday.
