Hundreds of people lined the streets and sidewalks surrounding the Nelson Cenotaph Thursday to honour Canada’s veterans at the Remembrance Day ceremony.

The Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band led the parade of veterans and many other groups, which also included Nelson City Police and Fire Department and RCMP.

Parade Captain Richard Abfalter led the ceremony that included speeches from Major Robin Burrows of the Salvation Army and Nelson Mayor John Dooley.

Dooley, who recently met with the family of Robert Hampton Gray, read an email to the crowd from Captain Bruce Walker of the Canadian Navy based in Japan.

Walker told Dooley about how highly regarded “Hammy” is and that his monument remains a focus of attention in Ogama, Japan.

Veteran Terry Gilead raised the Canadian Flag to half mast while trumpet soloist Tim Bullen played the Last Post and Reviley. Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Major David Hogg played Lament on the bagpipes.

At 11 a.m. members of the Nelson Pilots Association flew over the ceremony before two minutes of silence.

After the ceremony the procession paraded up Ward Street to Baker Street and to the Royal Canadian Legion.
