Mallard's Team — Mount Sentinel Wildcats

More than two decades of sending a team to the B.C. High School A Girl’s Volleyball Championships does not hide the tears of the Mount Sentinel Wildcats.

The Wildcats lost out on a chance to add to the storied history last weekend during the Kootenay Championships at Selkirk College.

But let’s be honest here. The last time a team from Mount Sentinel did not qualify for the provincial tournament came in 1987 when Salmo ousted the Cats.

During a stretch from 1991 to 2009 Mount Sentinel teams won four provincial titles — 1997, 2002, 2004, 2007 — and finished second or third eight times.

Not bad for a tiny school in the South Slocan.

Which is why staff and management at Mallard’s Source For Sports was quick to salute players and coaches with Team of the Week honours.

The team includes, back row, L-R, coach Joe Moreira, Chelsie Van Bynen, Kiaria Weatherall, Jessica Paulson and Jessie Rehwald. Front, Zahra Askary, Paige Paulson, Natasha Willness and Laura Soukeroff. Missing, Kim Kooznetsoff.
