Food Security is a major issue in the Nelson-Creston region, and that’s what will be served up for discussion at Crawford Bay School this Saturday, Nov. 6.

For the last three months Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall, through UBC intern Paris Marshall Smith, has been asking locals how to support and strengthen our regional food systems.

The event, beginning at 1 p.m., will give the report’s initial findings and ask for feedback from people in the region.

“After speaking with local farmers, food producers and consumers, it was clear that we needed to identify and strategize ways to rebuild our regional food system,” said Mungall.

To undertake this initiative, Mungall has hired an intern with a background and expertise in the very subject. Marshall-Smith, a master of Arts student at the University of British Columbia, has experience and education around agriculture development and community and regional planning.

“My interest in community and regional planning is in resilience, particularly the mechanisms that allow a community to move to respond effectively to change, to rebound, and thrive,” said Marshall-Smith.

“Paris has been speaking to food experts, farmers and producers from all over this region and has identified what it will take to keep our regional food systems flowing,” said Mungall. “I’m looking forward to the chance to share this information with our communities and get their feedback this Saturday.”
