Trail reopens after bears removed
With the bears in the bag, the Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail, formerly the Burling Northern Santa Fe right of way, is now opened along its entire length (Troup to Salmo).
The trail had been closed Sept. 17 to prevent encounters with grizzly bears, which had been spotted in the area.
The closure was in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, Conservation Officer Service and Wildlife Section and the Nelson City Police.
The last of the three grizzly bears that had taken up residence in Rosemont and South Nelson were caught and taken out of the area last week.
All three were caught near the end of Creek Street Sept. 25, removed from the area, and measured and tagged for information. The bears were removed as a family group to an area deep in the backcountry away from any population.
