Enrollment in SD8 sees slight increase
The enrollment bleeding may have stopped in the Kootenay Lake School District No. 8.
There are slightly more full-time students attending class this year — up from 4,927 to 4,940 — than last year, with schools in Nelson, Creston, Kaslo and the Slocan Valley having consistent numbers.
In fact, W.E. Graham Elementary School in Slocan City had a slight increase this year, despite being considered on the chopping block for closure last year. A decision on the closure of the school was delayed for one year.
Last year enrollment in the school district dropped by 150 students, while in 2008, school district staff predicted a drop of 140 students. But when September rolled around it turned out that they had overestimated that number by 60 — with only 80 fewer students showing up for class.
