A new wharf is planned for the city’s premiere park; it just comes with a $25,000 price tag to the city’s taxpayers.

The Rotary Club of Nelson has asked City council for $25,000 in the next City budget to aid and abet them in their bid to replace the wharf in Lakeside Rotary Park — a total of $75,000.

The wharf was installed in Lakeside Rotary Park in 1994 but is in need of replacement, said Rotary member Chris Fairbanks.

Based on previous discussions with the City, said Fairbanks, the City had acknowledged they would supply one third of the cost.

“The club seeks written confirmation of these available funds and I have to say, that project is highly recommended by your parks department,” he said. “If we see any shortfalls we will undertake fundraising to cover that.”

Barry Turner from the City Public Works department had advised the Rotary Club the wharf was in disrepair: the logs were becoming water logged and the entire structure was weakening.

The current 100-foot-long wharf (eight feet wide) would be the same dimensions.

After receiving three proposals from local wharf suppliers, the club had selected Nelco Marine with a 2009 estimate of $75,000 plus taxes — and the cost shared between the City, the club and other sources such as Columbia Basin Trust or the RDCK.

The current log structure wharf would be replaced with a galvanized steel truss dock.

Once the funding is in place, construction should commence in the spring of 2011 with the installation at high water in June of 2011.
