The Regional District of Central Kootenay Bylaw department continues to look for the owner of two dogs running wild in the Redfish Creek area 20 kilometers north of Nelson.

CAO Stuart Horn told CBC Radio West Friday RDCK was contacted by Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans claiming two dogs were causing a disturbance in the spawning channels of Redfish Creek.

“There was a couple of dogs coming down time to time and interrupting some of the spawning so that’s what got us on the line to come out and try to take care of them,” Horn explained.

“It’s been a couple of weeks we’ve been trying to track them down.”

The RDCK said the two dogs have been “running at large” since since mid August in the Redfish area and are in potential contravention of the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Dog Regulatory Bylaw No. 2387, 2014 for Electoral Areas E and F.

The RDCK has received many complaints from residents in the area.

Horn said an animal specialist contracted by the RDCK and its own bylaw officer have been attempting to track down the owners of the dogs, who don’t appear to be vicious.

“The hasn’t been any complaints around any attacks or vicious behaviour, they’ve really just been a nuisance, the main problem has been their involvement with the fish eggs,” Horn said.

Horn said RDCK officials did get a solid lead on one of the owners Thursday and Friday staff was visiting that home.

The dogs are believed to be a Golden Retriever and a mixed breed.

Horn said owners must have all dogs leashed when off property. The maximum fine for this bylaw offence is $500.

The RDCK hope to have the problem solved very soon.
