In a media release Tuesday, the City of Nelson said it was a successful grant application under the Tourism Dependent Communities Initiative.
The City of Nelson will now be receiving $700,000 to complete two key projects in the community — Railtown market precinct enhancements and visitor-based signage upgrades and strategy.
The media release said the grant will allow the City to complete many of the market precinct upgrades in the Railtown Sustainable Neighbourhood Plan.
“The City will work with local partners to complete enhancements in Cottonwood park, which include a visitor and community parking plaza, a new washroom building, electrical and lighting for the stage, a mural, plus general landscaping improvements,” the media release said.
“This builds on the various improvements completed in recent years in partnership with the Izushi Friendship Society and the Culture Development Committee, including the plaza, pathway, and viewing areas etc.”
The media release said the various components of the projects will be initiated this year and completed by 2022.
The release said the grant will also allow Council to develop an overall signage strategy and identify options to replace the existing Welcome to Nelson signs.
The current signs are almost 50 years old and are at the end of life.
“We will be reaching out to the community to ask you how you want Nelson reflected in our signage, especially our Welcome to Nelson signs,” the media release said.
“Do we want something totally new? Should we replicate the old signage? Or something in-between?”
Council is committed to working with the community and local designers, fabricators and artists to explore different options. Ultimately, this will be a community decision.
The following process will be used to gather input:
- Initiate dialogue through ThoughtExchange
- Initiate design competition to explore options
- Short-list design options
- Community vote on a preferred design
The grant funding received requires that the projects be initiated by December 31st, 2021 and completed by March 31st, 2023.
