Environmentalist David Suzuki visits Nelson-Creston riding Sunday

The Nelson-Creston Greens are pulling out all the stops as the BC Provincial Election campaign enters its final week with the hosting of award-winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster David Suzuki Sunday in the Heritage City.
Following a talk on renewable energy with the West Kootenay EcoSociety Sunday morning from 9-9:30 a.m. at the Kootenay Co-op, Suzuki will hit the campaign trail with Nelson-Creston Green Party candidate Kim Charlesworth.
The pair will be knocking on doors in the Nelson’s Uphill District from 11 a.m. to noon before the two attend a campaign rally at Lakeside Park from 1-3 p.m.
Suzuki will deliver a keynote address beginning at 1:30 p.m.
He will mingle with the public for a question and answer session until 3 p.m.
“The B.C. Liberal Government has failed to show leadership on taking action on climate change,” said Green Party Kim Charlesworth.
“We need to government action to mitigate the effects of climate change and help B.C. transition to the low-carbon economy. Dr. Suzuki has been advocating for our awareness on this file for decades and we are honoured he wanted to come to Nelson to inspire action through voting,” says Kim Charlesworth, Nelson-Creston B.C. Suzuki is the second heavyweight to appear in a campaign-style stop in Nelson for the Green Party.
Earlier BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver came to the riding to help the campaign push for Charlesworth.
Voters go to the polls Tuesday, May 9.
However, advance polling is now happening in the Nelson-Creston riding at the Best Western on Baker Street in Nelson and Creston at the Community Complex, Saturday and Sunday and Wednesday to Saturday, May 3-6.
Other advance polling locations are in Crawford Bay at the Crawford Bay School Wednesday and Thursday, May 3-4; Kaslo Legion Saturday and Sunday and Salmo Youth Community Centre Friday and Saturday, May 5-6.
NDP incumbent Michelle Mungall won the Nelson/Creston riding in 2013 by whopping 50.68 percent of the popular vote — 7576 for Mungall compared to 4348 for Liberal candidate Greg Garbula and 3133 for Sjeng Derkx of the Green Party.
Charlesworth and Mungall are vying for the seat against Tanya Wall of the BC Liberal Party and Independent candidates Jesse O’Leary and Tom Prior.
