Alex Neve to speak in West Kootenay: A call for renewal of Canada's fading human rights leadership

Selkirk College and Amnesty International will be launching the fall Mir Centre for Peace Lecture Series with a passionate and important talk by Alex Neve, Secretary-General of Amnesty International Canada.

His lecture, Protecting Human Rights: What’s Happening to Canada’s Voice, will focus on the concerns surrounding Canada’s fading human rights leadership and will put a powerful call out for renewal and revitalization to Canada’s policies and reputation as a human rights leader.

Mobile abattoir to be built in 2011

If all goes according to plan, Grand Forks and area will have a mobile abattoir in 2011. A series of meetings held over the last week by the Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricultural Society (GFBRAS) indicated that the abattoir will be supported by the area meat producers despite the changes in regulations introduced by the provincial government in April of this year.
 
The meetings, held at Community Futures Boundary, hosted Ron Duffel from the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport, Kathleen Gibson of the B.C.

Fire Bulletin: Smoky conditions expected to return

With shifting winds in the forecast, smoky conditions are expected in the next several days throughout the Southeast Fire Centre.

The forecast shows that prevailing winds will change over the next few days. This change is expected to bringing smoke from the central interior regions of British Columbia, where the majority of large fires continue to burn, to the Southeast Fire Centre. This is likely to bring hazy, smoky conditions.

CBT releases 2009/10 Annual Report

The 2009/10 Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Annual Report and audited financial statements are now available to the public. The Annual Report reflects CBT's performance for the 2009/10 year ending March 31, and details the financial investments, spending and Delivery of Benefits activities. 

Falling for the follies: catch the fever!

Summer in the Mountain Kingdom heralds the arrival of all kinds of fun stuff: open patios at local restaurants, museum and mine tours, snow-free (hopefully) hiking trails, and our own local musical theatre production, The Gold Fever Follies.  This ever-changing, dynamic show, consisting of stories loosely based on actual historical events in Rossland's history, will see its 24th season this year, and after my preview the other night I can say with confidence that this year's Follies is the must-see event of the summer.
