Selkirk initiates composting program

Selkirk College has started a composting program at its Castlegar campus with the installation of a new Earth Tub.

According to the 2009 State of the Environment Report, produced by School of Renewable Resources chair Derek Marcoux, up to 2.9 tonnes of waste (generated yearly) at the college is compost which could potentially be diverted from landfills.

Two Nelson men arrested under Mental Health Act

Two 30-year-old men were arrested under the Mental Health Act by Nelson Police Department officers in separate incidents in the city over the weekend.

One man was arrested in his home without incident on Feb. 25 and the other was arrested on Feb. 27 in the downtown core, said NPD Sgt. Dino Falcone.

"They were both transported to the Kootenay Lake Hospital where a physician admitted them to a psychiatric facility," he said.

In all, the Nelson Police Department handled nearly 50 calls for service since Friday, Feb. 25.

Saints finish season in thrilling fashion, earning three of four points from TWU

Riding a season high two game win streak, the Saints had no reason to hold back as they welcomed Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans to Nelson for their final two games of the season.

Knowing that at least one win would give the Selkirk men’s hockey team the highest point total in their BCIHL history, it was a matter of buckling down and conquering a team who had just recently beat Simon Fraser University (SFU) and Okanagan College, two of the top teams in the league.

Urgent Message: Saints move weekend series to NDCC Arena

The second game of the KIJHL Murdoch Division playoff series  between Beaver Valley Nitehawks and Castlegar Rebels has forced the Selkirk Saints to re-schedule their weekend set with the Trinity Western Spartans in B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League action.

The two games are now set for the NDCC Arena Complex.

The teams kick off the two-game set Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the Nelson and District Community Complex.

However, Saturday's game, originally scheduled for the Castlegar Complex has now been shift to the NDCC Arena in Nelson at 8 p. m.

Saints finally find offensive stride in blowout win over UFV…

The Selkirk Saints men’s hockey team welcomed the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) to town for a pair of games this past weekend.

With both teams out of the playoff race and near even in the standings, the stage was set for a battle on all fronts. 

A battle it was but from opposite perspectives and as UFV kept racking up penalty minutes, the Saints replied with goals….. and a lot of them.

By the time the dust settled the Saints pummeled the beleaguered squad from Fraser Valley  7-1, their biggest offensive output and most lopsided win to date.
