City all A-Twitter over social media

The City of Castlegar has hit the ground running as it embraces social media – tweeting and posting like mad as the first Kootenay community to utilize Facebook and Twitter as a vehicle for public dialogue.

City council green-lighted the new communications approach at its regular meeting Monday night – and within hours, the City was a Facebook force with a torrent of Tweets.

Replacement ferry for Upper Arrow Lake in the works

After 43 years in service, the DEV Galena (year-round) and MV Shelter Bay (summer only) on the Upper Arrow Lake route are reaching the end of their service life.

The Province will issue a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to start the process to replace the aging ferries that have plied Upper Arrow Lake in the north Slocan Valley for more than 40 years.

Inland ferry services are an integral part of the transportation network, moving residents, visitors and goods within British Columbia.

Ferry service will not be interrupted at any time during the ferry replacement process, which will take approximately three years, including crew training.

'Geo-cached' treasure awaits adventurers in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park

There may not be gold in them thar hills, but there is a geo-cached load of treasure hidden within the reaches of Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park.

BC Parks and the Geocaching Association of B.C. have placed a geo cache in Kokanee, along with 99 other parks around the province, with prizes for those who find them first.

A geocache is a hidden container found with the help of Global Positioning System technology. Each cache contains a stash of stickers, pins and other collectables, along with three specially-designed BC Parks 100 coins.

District receives final funds despite drop in student enrolment

The Kootenay Lake school district’s overall enrolment numbers are down 115 students, corresponding to a 2,367 drop province-wide, as final student numbers from the Province roll in.

School District No. 8 had a final total of 5,031 students enrolled district wide in full time programs as recorded in June, down from the 5,146 estimated in March.

Even still, the district will be getting $233,000 from the Province as part of their final grant for their 2010/11 school budget of $50.1 million.

Man disappears overnight while out on Slocan Lake; alcohol a factor

A mix of alcohol, wind and rain led to the disappearance of a 56-year-old man on Slocan Lake Wednesday night — with search and rescue finding him Thursday morning.

The man had set out on Slocan Lake on Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. from Silverton in a 14-foot aluminum boat with an electric trolling motor.

The man and an adult friend had traveled by boat from Silverton to New Denver and, shortly after arriving in New Denver, the man decided to put out in the boat on his own.

LV Rogers powers up with new project aimed to study power generated by sun

LV Rogers Secondary School will soon have the answer for how much energy does the sun produce in a day.

Students at the city’s high school will soon learn the answer after they were awarded a grant for $20,000 Tuesday from SolarBC to buy and install new solar panels.

Students will be involved right from the start in bringing solar power to their school. They will help to find the best location and angle for the solar panel to take advantage of the sun’s rays.
