NDCU throws in support for a disc golf course

The Nelson Disc Golf Society (NDGS) received some major financial support from the Nelson District Credit Union to install a proposed disc golf course (also known as Frisbee golf) in uphill Nelson.

NDGS, a group of over 40 disc golf enthusiasts/volunteers, is currently waiting for feedback regarding a November presentation they made to Nelson City Council, where they proposed to fund, install, and maintain a disc golf course in zoned parkland between the Salmo-Troup Rail Trail and the Nelson Municipal Cemetery.

Nisbet will be visiting the area to talk about his newest book, The Collector: David Douglas and the Natural History of the Northwest.

Jumbo Wild rally planned

The West Kootenay EcoSociety will be hosting a Jumbo Wild rally Feb. 5 at Central School as they send a message to the Provincial government that West Kootenay residents want grizzlies, not gondolas in the Purcell Mountains.

A decision is expected from the Provincial Government in early spring, so now is a critical time to make your voice heard, says the Society.

Crown reverses “banishment” sentence on Nelson man

Eighteen hours before a Nelson man was to leave the city for 18 months on a court-imposed banishment order his sentence was overturned by the same court.

Mikael Arrak, 26, was convicted of criminal harassment and ordered by a judge in Nelson Monday to leave the city, his mother Annely Arrak told The Nelson Daily.

But two days after delivering the sentence Judge Ronald Fabbro dissolved the order after hearing from Arrak's family and support workers in court late Wednesday.

Crown to reassess “banishment” sentence on Nelson man

A Nelson man who was banished from the city for 18 months after he was convicted of harassment was back in court today.

Michael Arrak, 26, was convicted of criminal harassment and ordered by a judge in Nelson Monday to leave the city, his mother told The Nelson Daily Wednesday.

However, Annely said the Crown had called her one day before Michael was required to leave the city and scheduled a “reassessment” of the situation.

Selkirk College has officially counted the Nelson & District Credit Union (NDCU) in with its donation of $6,000 towards the revitalization campaign for Studio 80 at Tenth Street campus in Nelson.

In November 2010, Selkirk College launched the “Count Me In” campaign to raise $150,000 for the revitalization of the Contemporary Music and Technology students’ performance and rehearsal studio (Studio 80). The funds will enable the college to replace the existing 80 well-worn seats with 104 new seats and to buy and install new lighting and sound equipment.

Unmet needs starting to be addressed in wake of Kerr fire

The Villa Motel will be coming forward with accommodations for at least one month for some of the around 60 people who were left homeless after the Kerr Apartment Building burned on Jan. 6, the city’s mayor announced Monday night.

John Dooley said although long-term accommodations for the people displaced by the devastating fire remain a concern, there are many people finding places to stay in the short term, including the North Shore motel.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance in another missing person case. 49-year-old Shawn McDonald has gone missing from Christina Lake where he has been living since September.
 
McDonald was last seen on Jan. 1 at 5:00 p.m. in Christina Lake and was reported missing on Jan. 3 to the Grand Forks RCMP detachment, explained Staff Sergeant Jim Harrison.
 
“His car is still behind, he left his wallet and everything else,” said Harrison. “He was living at the Lakeview Motel at Christina Lake. We’ve talked to his family and he hasn’t shown up.

AM Ford is asking for the public’s help in collecting donations for residents displaced by last week's fire at Kerr Apartments in Nelson.

After being approached by Terasen Gas, the dealership realized the importance of joining in the relief efforts.
 
The dealership began collecting items on Thursday and the showroom quickly filled up. By Friday afternoon, enough donations had already amassed to fill three truckloads.
