Cash comes in but furnishings still a need for Kerr residents

By Timothy Schafer, The Nelson Daily

Over $70,000 has been raised from the community to support the former residents of the Kerr Apartment Building which burned last month, says the chair of the Unmet Needs Committee.

This includes money raised by the Selkirk College Students Union for students living in the Kerr and donations of funds to Our Daily Bread, said Allison Alder.

Rousseau, Nasser and the Egyptian revolution

In watching the live streaming coverage of the Egyptian revolution on Aljazeera I am awe-struck by the incredible humanity of what is unfolding in that country. I imagine Jean Jacques Rousseau wandering amongst the throngs of people and being equally amazed and delighted. For the character of this uprising, this outpouring of frustration and joy, of kindness and determination, of compassion and hope and community is more Rousseau than it is Mohammed or Marx.

ATAMANENKO: Canada-US Security

Over the past few months I have talked to people who have experienced difficulties at the US border.  Often this involves having to leave one's vehicle and being subjected to intense interrogation.  What has, in the past, been a routine “friendly” crossing has turned into a “negative” interrogation by abusive American border guards.

It’s obvious the Nelson Leafs do not want to spend another off-season hunting for a coach and GM.

Which is why team president Russell Stocks announced the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League franchise has resigned current skipper Chris Shaw to another season with the Green and White.

It starts today: distracted drivers targeted by RCMP

Traffic services units throughout the West Kootenay will join other traffic units across the province as they focus on distracted drivers throughout the month of February.

Despite the new legislation banning the use of cell phones and other handheld electronic devices while driving, police have noticed more drivers taking chances, talking and texting while driving.

Sinixt answer could come forth in February

By Timothy Schafer, The Nelson Daily

The ultimate question of whether the Sinixt Nation exists or not will be one of the main side issues answered in BC Supreme Court when their court case to prevent logging on Perry Ridge resumes in Vancouver next month.

Arguments are still in process but have been adjourned this week until Feb. 3 as the Sinixt contend the Crown failed to do its duty to consult them in the course of issuing Timber Sale Licence A80073 to Sunshine Logging, said their lawyer, David Aaron.

ATAMANENKO: A year in review, part two

This past year, my staff and I had the privilege of assisting constituents faced with federal bureaucratic problems – unfair treatment, misinterpretations or just plain despair at not seeing any hope in their particular plight.

For the most part, I find the federal public service is exceptionally professional, knowledgeable and helpful, and should not be held responsible for the federal government cutbacks that have stretched their resources, time and services.
