(January 12th, 2023)

Shirley MCracken, in her 95th year of a well lived life, passed away after a short illness.

Shirley was born and raised in Montreal as the youngest and only girl, with three older brothers. Shirley always enjoyed singing, and as a young woman she joined a band and entertained  in the Lac-des-Plages  area of the Laurentians. During one of these summers, she met her future husband Don, and after a long friendship, they married in 1955.

Their one and only child Jill, was born in 1957 and the family moved to Ontario, where Shirley began her career as a medical receptionist.

In 1989, Don and Shirley moved to Nelson to be closer to Jill and her family. Her brother and sister in law, Fred and Edna Whiteley, also lived in Nelson, and the two couples enjoyed many happy times together.

After retiring , she began volunteering with the Nelson SPCA, and could be seen going around town collecting the donation cans. Animals were always a passion with her, and she could not pass a dog, without a pat and a “such a nice dog”.

Five years ago she moved into Mountain Lake Assisted Living, and gained a whole new family. She enjoyed her years there with the wonderful staff and created new friendships with other residents. Her love of singing was rekindled, and she could always be found participating with the musical entertainment.

Shirley’s family, daughter Jill (Randall )and grandsons Jarrod (Angelique )and Tyler (Siobhan) and great grandchildren, Foster and Parker will miss her. Shirley’s feistiness and kindness will be remembered by extended family and many friends.

At Shirley’s request, there will be no service. The family will reunite Shirley and Don in a private celebration of life.
