Lehmann, Petra

(March 9th, 2023)

Surrounded by family at home, Petra Lehmann, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2023, after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. Born in Wedel, Germany, Petra emigrated to Canada with her parents at four months old and grew up in New Hamburg, ON. She studied physiotherapy at McMaster University, moved to Nelson, BC for her final clinical practicum in 1980 and never looked back as Nelson felt like the perfect place to live and work given its proximity to nature and countless opportunities to recreate outside.

Petra founded Lakeside Physiotherapy in 1995 and owned the clinic for twenty-five years. Her commitment to lifelong learning remained important over the course of her career and she was particularly fond of her work in women’s health as one of the first pelvic floor specialists in the West Kootenays. Petra was an avid cross-country skier, downhill skier, hiker and road cyclist and she enjoyed these passions most when in the company of her dear friends. She was adventurous, but also enjoyed quieter days gardening, cooking, and reading. She was kind and curious and her gentle nature helped her connect with almost everyone that she met.

In addition to an enormous network of friends, Petra is survived by her parents, Edmund and Gisela Lehmann as well as her siblings Stefan (Jennifer) Lehmann and Sigrid (Raymond) Bagnell all of Nelson, BC, and Monika (Jorg) of Baar, Switzerland. She was most proud of and will be deeply missed by her children whom she shares with former spouse Russell Bourree of Nelson, BC, Corbin (Amy) of Calgary, AB and Peyton of Vancouver, BC, as well as her grandchildren, Maisie, and Thea. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews and their partners: Madison (Joshua), Tia (Mike), Emma (Braeden), Eric (Elaine), Livia (Daniel), Christoph (Carole) as well as their children, Isaac, Lydia, Bennett, Delilah, Elias, and Robin.

The family is grateful for Petra’s friends who provided food, company, and care in the last months of her life. She cherished every homemade juice, loaf of bread, and meal with friends, as well as her daily walks outside and visits with her parents, family, and friends. Special thanks to Dr. Margaret MacIntyre, the neurosurgery and oncology teams at the Kelowna Hospital, the team of GP oncologists at Kootenay Lake Hospital as well as the palliative home care team based out of the Gordon Road office in Nelson. Without this care and support, it would have been significantly more challenging to honour Petra’s wish to pass in her home.

Please join the family for Celebration of Life in Petra’s memory at Taghum Hall on March 31, 2023, from 2-4 p.m.

Light refreshments will be served. Donations in Petra’s honour can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation, specifically directed to brain cancer and glioblastoma research.
