Nelson Hydro and FortisBC crews have been busy Wednesday cleaning up from a winter storm that impacted the West Kootenay region New Year's Eve.

Nelson Hydro crews have been working on a section of power lines that affected customers in the Balfour and Coffee Creek areas. Nelson Hydro said power is expected to be restored by Wednesday night.

Customers in Blewett should have power restored by Thursday morning.

"We thank all of our customers for their patience as our crews work in wet winter conditions to make the necessary repairs to restore power to our entire system," a posting on the City of Nelson Facebook page said.

Meanwhile, FortisBC said the power company experienced multiple trees on lines and some damage to structures during the winter storm.

"(The storm) affected power to just over 2,7000 customers north of Nelson, mostly in the Crawford Bay and South Slocan areas," a FortisBC spokeperson said.

FortisBC said most customers are back online while crews continue to make repairs.

FortisBC customers can find more information and updates on the company outage map.
