Wildcats narrowly miss out on medal at BC Volleyball Championships

The Mount Sentinel Wildcats came within a few sets of capturing a medal at the BC High School A Boys' Volleyball Championships Saturday at the Selkirk College Gymnasium in Castlegar.

The Wildcats dropped a four-set decision to Credo Christian of  Langley 25-21, 30-28, 19-25, 25-16 to finish fourth overall at the 16 team tournament.

Vernon Christian defeated Centennial Christian of Terrace 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-20) in the best-of-five final.  

Mount Sentinel opened tournament play finishing fourth in Pool A against Vernon Christian, Centennial Christian and Credo Christian.

The Wildcats then defeated Bulkley Valley 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-21) Friday at L.V. Rogers Gymnasium to advance to quarterfinals later in the day against St. Andrews Sabres of Victoria.

Mount Sentinel was pushed by the Sabres but were able to claim the playoff encounter in four games, 31-29, 25-19, 23-25, 26-24, to advance to Saturday’s semi-final.

However, the Wildcats faces eventual champion Credo Christian, losing in straight sets 25-15, 26-24, 25-14.

Fernie Falcons, the other Kootenay school entered into the tournament, finished 15th.

High level volleyball action continues as Mount Sentinel now hosts the BC High School A Girls' Volleyball Championships beginning Thursday at Selkirk and LVR gyms.

Host Mount Sentinel Wildcats open the tournament Thursday at Selkirk College. Other Kootenay school include Fernie Falcons and Sparwood.

The tournament runs through Saturday with the medal games set for 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Selkirk College in Castlegar.
