The Mount Sentinel Wildcats passed the first test of the 2010 B.C. High School Girl’s Volleyball season Saturday in Trail — well sort of.

The Cats lost in straight sets (25-15, 25-20) to a much more experienced Selkirk Storm side from Kimberley but proved to head coach Joe Moreira this team will battle right to the bitter end.

“We played great,” said Moreira when asked about his team’s play at the 38th annual High School Senior Girl’s Invitational Volleyball Tournament at the J. Lloyd Crowe gymnasium.

“With only eight players (five – Grade 10’s and three – Grade 12’s) and no super stars like a (Team B.C. star) Katie Wayling, we are a very different team.

“However, what we lack in experience, height, and provincial team calibre talent we proved, at least this weekend, that we can compete and play with tremendous enthusiasm.”

Mount Sentinel completed the round robin draw undefeated, edging Selkirk Saturday morning just barely.

The Cats dominated the other three teams in the tournament, L.V. Rogers Bombers of Nelson, Golden Eagles and host J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks. But in the final it was a different story as the Storm overwhelmed the Wildcats.

Despite the loss in the final, Moreira believes this edition of the Wildcats has something he can build upon.

“The surprise this weekend was our consistent play,” he said. “Something that was quite unexpected, but a great delight to see.”

SIDE OUT: The Cats travel to Kelowna Friday to compete in the Immaculata Invitational Tournament. . . . The L.V. Rogers Bombers squad struggled in its first test of the high school season, finishing fifth in the tournament. Golden edged host J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks in the bronze medal contest.
