Canadians are urged to don a sports jersey Thursday to show support for the families of the Humboldt Broncos following the horrific bus accident near Tisdale, Saskatchewan last Friday.

The push via social media is a way for the country to show support for Humboldt after the bus the Broncos team was traveling in collided with a semi-trailer on a highway in Saskatchewan Friday.

The team was en route to Nipiwan for a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoff game against rival Hawks.

“We have no words and we have no idea how to help at this time,” said Teressa Bramley in a Facebook post.

“We would love to show our support for the Humboldt Broncos and the families affected by this terrible tragedy.”

Ginger Lester at the City of Nelson is asking all City of Nelson staff to join in by wearing a jersey. Other businesses in Nelson are also urging staff to join in on the great cause.

“The hockey community is HUGE and if everyone showed their support by wearing their hockey jerseys on Thursday April 12, 2018,” Bramley said.

“The families will know we are here to support and that hockey families everywhere stand united during tragedy.”

To show Humboldt the rest of the country is behind them, the public is asked to photograph anyone wearing a jersey to post it on social media with #jerseysforhumboldt.

Anyone wanting to donate to help those affected can also go to the GoFundMe page, which is now $9,958,891 –  the original goal being $4M.
