The COVID-19 pandemic has halted many normal, everyday events in society, but it will not stop how the public honours military veterans.

Due to COVID-19, the Nelson Legion Branch 51 is inviting the public to celebrate the Remembrance Day 2020 ceremony with family and friends in the comfort and safety of their own homes via Facebook Live broadcast as well on The Nelson Daily Facebook page.

“This year’s ceremony is scaled down due to current health regulations that restrict the size of public gatherings to only 50 people and so there will be no marching this year and only Legion Members and Veterans will be allowed to parade at the Cenotaph,” said Nelson Legion Branch 51 organizers.

The Remembrance Day celebration begins at 8 a.m. at the Nelson Cemetery before the event moves to the cenotaph at Nelson City Hall courtyard at 10:45 a.m.

The Nelson Legion Branch 51 said wreaths will be pre-laid around the Cenotaph with a small contingent of people from both the Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band and Nelson City Band.

“Nelson Legion Branch 51 would like to thank all of you for your continued support,” organizers said, adding even hard times, the response to this year’s Poppy campaign has been exceptional.

“Wear your poppy proudly and please stay safe.”
