It appears to be a two-person race in the Boundary-Similkameen riding for the vacant seat in the upcoming BC Provincial Election.

Both leading parties in the BC Legislature, NDP and Liberals, announced candidates after Premier John Horgan announced the snap election earlier this month.

For the Liberal party, Oliver Councillor Petra Veintimilla will look to retain the seat vacated by MLA Linda Larson.

Larson decided she would not seek re-election following Horgan’s surprise announcement.

Veintimilla is being challenged by Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Area D Rep Roly Russell of Grand Forks, who won the nomination over Aimee Grice, a councillor from Oliver.

Veintimilla, nominated by the BC Liberals, one day after the BC NDP called a snap election a year ahead of schedule, is “excited and honoured” for the opportunity.

Russell said this riding is his home.

“I am passionate about making sure that we sustain and keep this a beautiful and sustainable region to earn a living and raise our families,” Russell said in a press release.

Candidate nominations close Friday, October 1.

Advance polling runs from October 15-21 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. General voting day is Saturday, October 24 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Boundary-Similkameen riding stretching along the BC/USA border, from Princeton to Osoyoos and over to Grand Forks and Christina Lake.

In the 2018 elections, two-time winning MLA Larson defeated Colleen Ross of the NDP by 10.07 per cent. BC Greens Vonnie Lavers finished third and Independent Peter Entwistle was fourth.
