UPDATED: Abbotsford Police officer identified as man in critical condition following Baker Street altercation

The Abbotsford Police Department confirms that one of their off-duty police officer intervened in a disturbance incident in Nelson, BC on July 16, 2020, and, as a result of this incident, the officer remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

This information was released Sunday by Nelson Police Department in a media release.

“We will not be releasing the officer’s name at this time so that the family can have privacy,” the Abbotsford Police Department said in the NPD media release.

“AbbyPD is and will continue to support this officer’s family and friends during this emotional and terribly difficult time.”

“This incident has had significant impact of the Abbotsford Police Department family and we continue to provide resources and support for our staff,” the AbbyPD added.

Nelson Police Department continues its investigation into this incident that sent the 55-year-old officer to hospital in critical condition following an altercation Thursday on Baker Street in the Heritage City.

Nelson Police said a 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident. 

NPD said all media inquiries and updates with respects to this investigation will be released by Nelson Police Department.

The Abbotsford Police Department would like to pass on a heartfelt thank you to all the medical staff and civilians who stepped up to assist our officer.

Nelson Police Department said further updates on the officer’s condition will be released when available.

Abbotsford man in critical condition following Baker Street altercation

Nelson Police said a 55-year-old man from Abbotsford remains in hospital in critical condition following an altercation Thursday on Baker Street in the Heritage City.

Nelson Police said in a media release Saturday that officers were called to a disturbance in the 500 block of Baker Street Thursday evening.

Police said when officers and Emergency Services arrived in the area, they found a seriously injured male who was quickly transported to hospital by BC Ambulance Service.

“This investigation is in the preliminary stages,” Nelson Police media release said. “However, it appears that one male was causing a disturbance in the roadway when the victim approached him and a physical altercation ensued.”

Nelson Police said the victim, from Abbotsford, sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital in critical condition.

Police said a 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this incident. 

Police said Nelson Police Department General Investigation Section, in consultation with RCMP Major Crimes Unit, are continuing the investigation into this matter.
