Nelson’s Tamar Ouziel has a big job.

She is Makeup Department Head in the film and television industry, which means she’s the manager and creative director for the makeup looks in film and television shows.

Ouziel works closely with the hair department and directors to design the looks, does scheduling budgeting, and oversees makeup assistants.

“It’s a massive job,” says Ouziel.

“You’re part of this creative process. You get to help manifest the look of the characters; you hopefully have a great team that supports you. My job is to read the script and break it all down. It’s a big job, but I love it.

Ouziel is getting involved locally, sharing her skills. She assisted the Civic Theatre with 2021’s Momentum Masterclass workshop series for the Kootenay Screen-Based Industry.

Her passion for her craft is evident.

“Even the most mundane is magical to me,” Ouziel explains.

“There are many different departments, lighting, grip, camera, costume. It’s like this huge chaotic contemporary dance, and when it’s a well-oiled machine, it’s like watching the theatre behind the theatre.”
