The water may have been a bit cold, but hearts were filled with enthusiasm and warmth as First Responders from throughout the region joined hands with local Special Olympians at the Team Cold in the Koots fundraising event Friday afternoon at Rotary Lakeside Park beach.

The cold plunge into Kootenay Lake was in memory of Nelson Police Cst. Mathieu Nolet, a Special Olympics volunteer who perished following a ski accident near Kaslo in January.

Cst. Nolet was backcountry skiing with colleague and friend, Cst. Wade Tittemore when the two were engulfed by an avalanche near Goat Range Provincial Park northwest of Kaslo.

Friday’s Team Cold in the Koots event raised money for the local Nelson chapter of Special Olympics of BC.

Cst. Nolet had a passion for Special Olympics prior to joining the Nelson Police force, coaching golf and other volunteer initiatives with SPBC.

Special Olympians from the Nelson branch were joined by local Nelson Police and RCMP officers, Nelson Fire and Rescue Services members, KERPA (Kootenay Emergency Response Physicians Association), BC Ambulance and firefighters from the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

Special Olympics Nelson, one of the longest running locals in BC, consists of an ever-growing group of dedicated volunteers and athletes from the Heritage City and surrounding area.

SOBC in the Kootenays currently offers 5-pin bowling, swimming, snowshoeing, bocce and floor hockey as well as alpine skiing.

Nelson Special Olympians were joined by Nelson Police Chief Constable Donovan Fisher, Nelson Fire and Rescue Services Chief Jeff Hebert and NPD Cst. Lisa Schmidtke for a photo before the dip into Kootenay Lake.

There's nothing like a swim in March to jolt the system and raise funds for Nelson Special Olympics.
